From a spreadsheet to a map in three steps
Drop the workbook. The file is opened in your browser, sheet by sheet. If the list starts under a title, a logo line or a date, those lines are skipped and the real header row is found. When the workbook has several sheets, the tool opens the one with the largest table and lets you switch.
Check the columns. Each column in the preview has a dropdown menu: Street, City, State, ZIP code, Full address, Country, Latitude, Longitude, Label… The tool fills them in for you; correct any column assignment that is wrong. “First row is a header” can be turned off for a list without one.
Place the rows. Pins appear as each address is found. Rows with the same address are looked up once. Rows that already have latitude and longitude columns are placed directly.
What Excel files look like in real life
Most address lists are not clean tables. The tool is built for the usual problems:
- ZIP codes stored as numbers, so Boston’s 02134 became 2134. A US ZIP column is repaired.
- Merged title cells and notes above the header.
- An address spread over two lines (“Address 1”, “Address 2”), or in one cell with the city and the ZIP code.
- Empty rows in the middle of the list and totals at the end: rows without an address are left out and counted.
- Several countries in one sheet: a Country column, a state or a postcode tells the tool where to look; otherwise you choose the default country.
Your workbook stays on your computer
The file is not uploaded. Only the text of each address is sent to be placed on the map; names, phone numbers, emails, amounts and every other column stay in your browser.
After the map
Color the pins by any column with a few distinct values (Type, Region, Sales rep), fix the points marked “to check” by dragging them, and download the map as a PNG image. Downloading the workbook with latitude and longitude added is part of Pro ($19 for 7 days).
Questions
Can I use an old .xls file?
Not directly. Open it in Excel and choose File, Save As, Excel Workbook (.xlsx), then drop the new file. Copying the cells and pasting them here works too.
My workbook has several sheets. Which one is used?
The sheet with the largest table. A menu shows every sheet with its number of rows, so you can switch in one click.
Excel removed the leading zero of my ZIP codes. Will they be found?
Yes. In a ZIP code column, a four-digit value such as 2134 is read as 02134, and a nine-digit value as ZIP+4.
Does it work with Excel for Mac or Excel Online?
Yes. Any .xlsx file works, whichever version of Excel saved it. You can also paste cells copied from Excel Online.
Are formulas and formatting kept?
The tool reads the last calculated values saved by Excel, not the formulas, and ignores colors and fonts. Your workbook itself is not changed.
