From a sheet of addresses to Google Earth
Google Earth reads KML, but an address list in Excel has no coordinates. The missing step is geocoding: finding the latitude and longitude of every row, and checking that each one is right before it lands in Google Earth.
This tool does that step:
- Drop the workbook (.xlsx) or paste its cells. The sheet and the header row are found for you.
- Check the columns: street, city, state, ZIP code, or one full-address column; latitude and longitude if some rows already have them.
- Place and check: every row is drawn on the map as it is found. Rows the geocoder is unsure about are listed with the reason; drag them to the right place or keep them.
- Download: the map as a PNG image, free. The KML file, with the same points and your corrections, is part of Pro ($19 for 7 days).
Why check before exporting
A KML file made straight from a spreadsheet keeps every mistake: the store placed in the middle of its ZIP code, the office found in the wrong Springfield, the address that was not found and silently left out. Here each of these is visible before the file exists:
- points found only at the town or ZIP code level are marked to check;
- addresses not found are listed, and can be placed by hand;
- rows without an address are counted, not dropped without a word.
Labels and colors
Choose the column that names each point (store name, customer, site number). Color the points by a column with a few distinct values, such as Region or Status: the legend appears next to the map and on the PNG image, and the same colors are used in the KML file.
Your data stays yours
The workbook is read in your browser and is not uploaded. Only the text of each address is sent to be placed on the map; the other columns never leave your computer.
Questions
Can I download a KML file today?
Yes, with Pro ($19 for 7 days). For free, you can place your addresses, check and correct them, color them and download the map as a PNG image.
What does the KML file contain?
One placemark per row. Each placemark uses the value in your chosen label column as its name, with the other columns in its description, and one color per category. It opens in Google Earth, Google My Maps and most GIS software.
My sheet already has latitude and longitude. Is anything looked up?
No. Rows with coordinates are placed directly; only rows with an address alone are looked up.
Will the KML export include my manually corrected locations?
Yes. A pin you drag to the right place keeps its new position, marked as placed by hand.
